Cat-Skiing in Whistler

Whistler’s only cat-skiing operation with the best value in the backcountry

Explore 4,300 acres of incredible Coast Mountain terrain with Powder Mountain Cat-Skiing, the only cat-skiing operation based in Whistler. Our terrain and the use of a cat offers a backcountry experience for just about everyone: intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers and snowboarders.

With a guaranteed minimum of 6 runs per day (and no cap if your group is game) you’ll maximize your vertical with no extra charge - the only unlimited vertical option in Whistler! Unlike heli-skiing, cat-skiing isn’t weather-dependent, so we operate even when helicopters are grounded, making us Whistler’s most reliable backcountry ski experience.

Be the first to ski fresh powder as it falls. Join us in the Coast Mountains backcountry.

Meet at our office (4154 Village Stroll Whistler) to check in and sign your waiver.

Be dressed and ready to ski. Please don't be late: we can't wait.

    08:00 am

We drive guests in our 4x4 vehicle to our simple base lodge where we have a cozy fireplace and bathroom facilities. After a short talk on the day's proceedings and a short snowcat safety briefing, we load up and head out into the backcountry.

After that, it's time to get our first taste of the day's snow. You will be at around 6,500 feet altitude ready for the first run of the day. The first run is always mellow to let everyone get warmed up, and to allow the guides to get an idea of the ability level of the group.

The groups' ability and snow conditions determine what kind of terrain and runs we will be riding.

People usually choose to eat our delicious sandwich lunch in the Cat so as not to waste any skiing time. Drinks and other snacks are always available.

    2:15pm- 2:30pm

At the end of your day we either get in the cat for the ride down, or if you have the legs for it you can ride down the cat road. That can be a bit hectic so please ride in the cat if you're at all unsure about it.

    4:00pm

You return to our Base Lodge, check out the photos, then transfer into our 4x4 vans and head back to Whistler.

  • Each cat has an assigned photographer who is with you the entire day, not just for a run or two.

The photographer chronicles the whole day. It's an experience that no matter how many times you've been is always amazing and filled with moments where you think: "I wish I had a picture of that!"

The photo crew strive to get all those moments. Your day never ends because of the photos. You can re-live that perfect turn or slash forever.

At the end of every day at the base lodge we'll run a slideshow showing all the photos shot during your day with us. There's nothing better than having your best day ever and then seeing the photographic proof.

You can walk away with a USB stick containing every picture of you plus general images from the day for CAD$100 ($500 per Private group).

  • We thank you for taking the time to consider booking your backcountry experience with us.

We pride ourselves on balancing mountain risk management with the customer experience and we look forward to taking you into the amazing Coast Range Mountians. There are numerous hazards involved in wilderness adventures and you can familiarize yourself with those at the HeliCat Canada website or download our "Release of Liability" waiver to review prior to booking your experience.

To give you some insight into our risk management process a high level look into a day in the life of our team is as follows.

0715: Road sweep cat departs for the trails and the tour drivers get busy prepping the tour cats for the day.

0730: Guide assigned to hazard forecasting presents the avalanche hazard forecast for the day and discussion about terrain use follows.

0800: We suit up and boot up to be ready for guest arrival at 0820 or so.

0835: Guest receive a cat or heli orientation including safety procedures prior to departure. Some of the orientation will take place in the cat.

0930-14:30: Guiding team continuously assess the hazards of the day.

If Powder Mountain cancels your heli-ski day partway through, we will refund you on a per-run basis.

      Injury Policy
We do not provide refunds for injuries sustained during your experience. Please consult your personal insurance provider for coverage options.

      Alcohol & Drug Policy

      • Powder Mountain reserves the right to refuse service to any guest appearing under the influence of alcohol or drugs prior to departure.

      • We also reserve the right to terminate the experience if a guest consumes alcohol or drugs during the trip.

      Weather & Operational Cancellations
If the Powder Mountain Operations Team cancels your experience for any reason, a full refund will be issued.

  • Age Minimum: 12 years old. Booking a private heli or cat is recommended so that you can ski at the speed required for your child. Please keep the rest of the group in mind if you intend to book a public trip.

Ability: This is subjective, but you should be an experienced powder skier or snowboarder. You should also be ski/snowboard fit. Snowcat or Heli skiing/boarding should not be the "warm up" to your holiday or season. Cat-Skiing has a more casual pace compared to heli-skiing and offers the option to sit out a run if you require.

    • The typical helicopter extraction cost from our tenure is $2,000, and for extraction by snowcat or snowmobile it's around $1,500. Powder Mountain Heliskiing and Catskiing Inc reserves the right to choose the most suitable vehicle for extraction based on our assessment of the situation.

    • For an optional $75 CAD daily charge per person, our insurance covers your costs for transportation from the injury site to the the public highway. It does not cover medical or any other expenses.

    • If you do not take this optional insurance and you require evacuation, we reserve the right to charge your evacuation costs to the card used to book the trip. Where several people are booked on one card, and where our insurance is not purchased, that card will be charged with any evacuation cost for any of the people booked with it.

    • You can add the insurance option to any of our packages.

  • There is no snowcat that can compare to the power, reliability, comfort and speed of the Pisten Bully 300.

A few years ago we upgraded all our cats to Pisten Bully 300's from Cold Smoke Leasing Co. That increased the speed of the cats so we get more runs each day. Our new cats are so fast everyone can have an epic powder experience.

The Pisten Bullys deliver superior comfort and reliability when it comes to getting up the mountain to get the untracked snow. The cats have bucket coach seats in the passenger cabins which really let you relax on the way up the mountain in between runs.

To ensure that your ride up is as comfortable as your run down is fun, the passenger cabins are especially designed for groups of 10 guests plus 2 guides and the photographer.

The cabins are heated, so even on the coldest day cat skiing is a warm fun powder adventure. When it’s minus 20 and the snow is as good as it will ever get, having a heated 10-15 minute ride up for your next run will make you ready to really charge on each run. It might ruin you for chairlifts and t-bars forever! With the cabin's big windows, you get the best view of the surrounding peaks that have made this part of the world legendary.
