25. January 2008 kenach

Sorry we've been lagging on putting up a post or two about what we've been doing. It was a really fun last week or two. Benji Weatherly was up with a bunch of his friends who just happen to be some of the best surfers in the world, making a movie with Taylor Steele called My Life As A Movie. It's about the magic that happens when pro surfers, skaters, snowboarders and friends meet in their criss crossing lives and the fun and experiences you can have being out of your element doing the other pros sport and living their life for a bit. Amazing concept and the movie should be sick judging from the teaser we saw.  Benji and Taylor were combining the trip to be a filmming trip for the movie and a reunion trip of all the friends that made "Momentum" the surf movie that changed everything in surfing. It was all time when they turned up with their friends. Hows this for a cat crew. Don Schwartz as guide,
First Day: Benji, Taylor, Taylor Knox, Keoni Watson, Kelly Slater, Shane Dorian, Pat O'Connell, Abe the North Shore Lifeguard, Jay Weatherly, Joe Curren, skater Tosh Townend, Pete the filmer, Greg Browning who had to drop out due to foot damage from charging surfing. Keith Malloy and a couple other friends came just to hangout even though they were nursing injuries. Talk about turning up when it's good. They turned up when it was insane. Chest deep and light and dumping snow. Talk about jumping in at the deep end.  It took a couple runs for everyone to get their shred on as it was deeper than anything they'd ever experienced. Which was cool since that was what the film was about. Abe the lifeguard charged. Nothing like 8 inches of bare kidneys in a snowstorm with no complaints or even noticing it to show why he's a North Shore Lifeguard. Colin Whyte the editor of Future Snowboarding Magazine just hapened to be in town so we "dragged" him along as well.

Angel rocked the house getting great photos like this one of Kelly, in a massive snowstorm.

Everyone hit Whistler Blackcomb for a couple days as we had to install all the new seats into the cats and receive the Pisten Bully 300 that completes our new all PB fleet. We toiled while they hit up the mountain thanks to Michelle Leroux. Afterwards we had a huge BBQ at my house. I didn't know I could get 25lbs of meat on the BBQ. Yeah South African Mixed Grill and Hy's seasoning salt. One of the highlights was Kaia my 2 and a half year old dragging one of the best surfers in the world down to the TV room to watch the Backyardigans kids show "Surfs Up". Holy that was funny. Especially when she showed Keoni how to paddle out and stand up on a surfboard. CLASSIC! Now that he knows how to stand up maybe he'll use his new skill next time he paddles from Maui to Oahu in a race.

The next day was mental as well. Unfortunately it was "Only" waist deep. Just to make the crew even more unreal, We swapped out some of the crew and added snow board legends Todd Richards and Dave Downing. Todd's out the front door front flip was classic. Dave showed that he still rips. Man did we have fun. Everyone was getting their game together. It was like everyone knew day three was coming...

The third day was sunny and superhero snow... so the supeheroes showed up. Jake Burton and Tony Hawk swapped out for some of the crew that bailed for the first good swell of the winter in Hawaii. I've ridden with Jake a few times and this was one of the best. Catskiing kicks ass. Time to bullshit, time to laugh, time to eat lunch, time to gurn the guys that left, time to get all the pow turns you could ever want, time to make new friends, time to have the best shred day of your life. Everyone had their game on and Keoni remembered to break out the "Offering to the Cat Gods" - Island Princess Macadamia Nut and Caramel Popcorn from Hawaii. The Cat Gods were happy and so were we. Keoni and Shane have mad skills for guys who make their living in Hawaii. Keoni nailed a couple good lines on Park and Huck and so did Shane. They lined up a good air on Poor Rabbits and ollied some trees. Tony ripped it up too.

He dropped a good line in Park and Huck too. Benji made awesome hot tubs all over the place and had so much fun I thought he was going to pee himself.

Especially when Tony hit a windlip and launched to back about 20 feet. Classic. It was fun telling him he rides like a girl. It's not an insult for those of you that think it is... His wife is Lohtse, started the IFSA (The International Freesking Association) with Shane McConkey. Lohtse straight up rips so we weren't slagging, we were bragging. Once Lohtse has their baby I think Tony is going to owe her some shred time. Just to make the day even funnier, Kelly split for the Bob Hope Golf Classic and couldn't get on a flight so missed the day waiting in Vancouver. I guess he's the Wait Time World Champion. Every run Keoni would update him on what he was missing. That's just mean. But when it's your best friend.. you have to do it! It never gets good till someone leaves. So thanks guys it was nice of you guys to sacrifice for our pleasure.

Riding with Jake is always fun. It's no wonder Burton owns it as far as snowboarding goes. All you surf companies better look out. Jake still rides over 100 days a year. Now that he owns Channel Islands Surfboards I asked him if was going to get a 100 days in the surf too.  It makes me really stoked to know that someone as cool as Jake owns the best company in snowboarding. If Jake ever sells Burton I'll quit snowboarding the same day. Luckily Jake has no "Exit Plan" and luckily Powder Mountain has a fifty year tenure so I'll be 90 when our tenure needs renewing. As long as we get a 30 year extension I shouldn't have any worries about having no "Exit Plan".

My exit plan is to be cremated and my ashes mixed into wax and then all my friends boards, skis, and surfboards will be waxed up and my ashes will spread all over my favorite places as my friends snowboard, ski and surf their favorite places. Now that's an exit strategy. Go out Rabbit Style!

All day long we pointed out features and lined up nice lines with hits for everyone that wanted them and pow lines for those that wanted that. Todd threw down the "I've been a pro forever and this is why I get paid the big bucks" method and Dave popped a giant ollie over a tree.

Tosh Townend channeled one of my best friends ever, old school shred Evan Feen, with his super skate style. Friggin' EPIC!  Even though I ride with pros all summer at The Camp of Champions sometime you need a little reminder of what real snowboarding is. Sometimes no matter how much fun you have had you think there's no way you can have that much fun again. Well I found out that you can have that much fun anytime you want. You just have to have the right crew.  Best days riding in a long time. Since... Jan 1st, 2008 with the new years crew! Yeah Powder Mountain Good Times! get your crew together and get up here it's supposed to snow tonight so it's back to riding deep pow instead of the sun and not so deep powder we've had this last week.

There are not many days where you think it was the best day of the year, but this was definitely one of them!
What a treat to ride with the top surfers of the world and Jake Burton all in the same day.
Great friends, blue skies, deep powder, and no wind. I can't wait for these guys to come back next year.
Kelly Slater left his snowboard behind at our lodge, so expect to see that up on ebay soon! Well, something has to pay for our end of the year party.

This was the best day of my year, until 3 days ago. I'll write more about that day as soon as I peel the grin off my face.
